  • 1 pound ground beef or ground turkey or plant-based alternative
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely chopped
  • 1 medium green bell pepper diced
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 1 cup diced tomatoes canned or fresh
  • ¼ cup ketchup or BBQ sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey or maple syrup
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard or Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • 1 to taste black pepper
  • 1 to taste salt
  • ½ cup beef broth or vegetable broth
For the Texas Toast
  • 8 slices Texas Toast or garlic bread
  • ¼ cup butter or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon dried parsley
For the Toppings
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shredded
  • ½ cup jalapeños sliced, fresh or pickled
  • ½ medium red onion sliced
  • 1 cup coleslaw for serving

Cooking Instructions
  1. Brown the ground beef in a large skillet with olive oil over medium heat for about 5-7 minutes.
  2. Add chopped onion and diced green bell pepper; cook for 5-7 minutes until softened.
  3. Incorporate minced garlic and spices; cook for 1 minute until fragrant.
  4. Add tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, ketchup, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, salt, and pepper; simmer gently for 5 minutes.
  5. Cover and simmer for 30 minutes to 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
  6. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Prepare Texas toast with garlic butter and parsley; bake for 5-7 minutes until crispy.
  7. Assemble the sandwiches with the savory filling and desired toppings.
  8. Serve warm, pairing with coleslaw or salad for an extra touch.
